Wireless Broadband to Assist Nursing

Digita Oy’s @450 broadband network allows using wireless broadband in the town of Savonlinna. The objective of the joint project of Digita, East Savo Hospital District and the service operator is to find advantages in nursing and healthcare services. The objective is to allow the personnel of district nursing services to focus on care work as extensively as possible.

Secure wireless network connection independent of time and place enable real-time communication of information.

“Remote connection to the electronic patient record system and the required web applications allow the retrieval of information and reporting from the entire system in real time,” says IT Specialist Samuli Nikkanen from East Savo Hospital District.

More Time for Caring

Our goal is to improve the use of time of district nursing services in such a way that making entries to patient records and finalising matters can be carried out at the patients’ homes. Thanks to the new network, the nurse may make as many as 30 house calls more per month, because reports and patient data can be up-dated in real-time.

“Thanks to the wireless network connection, updated patient records can be retrieved from the system, for example, laboratory test results. The treatment and changes in medication, for example, can thus be carried out without delay. This will speed up care, decrease the number of visits and saves the nurses’ time,” Mr. Nikkanen says.

In addition to district nursing and care, the wireless network will be harnessed for the development needs of emergency medicine, on call services and administration.
